Improve your visual storytelling skills with Magnum Photos nominee Emin Özmen and his long-term collaborator Cloé Kerhoas, picture editor at Le Journal, at the Magnum Photos Paris office.
During this unique three-day multimedia workshop, a small group of up to 20 students will work in close collaboration with this award-winning duo.
Places will be allocated based on the quality of submitted portfolios and participants will have to bring their own computer with editing software.
Workshop Schedule
On the first evening, students will have a tour of the Magnum Office and a presentation of the photographer’s career and work, followed by some drinks in the Gallery space to get to know each other.
On the second day, Emin will take students through his creative process and critically examine his storytelling approach: from shooting to post production, using photography, video and sound, editing, working with text and finally publishing.
The last day will focus on the participants’ work and explore new perspectives on photojournalism and social documentary. Its aim is to examine how one can push a personal project further than classic visual narration.
The workshop will be held in English.

Emin Özmen studied photography in the Fine Arts Faculty at Marmara University of Istanbul and in Linz (Austria).
In 2011, he worked on the famine in East Africa, Tohoku Earthquake in Japan and economic protests in Greece. The following year, he started covering the Syrian Civil War and ISIS crises in Iraq, which he continues to document. He covered Mosul operations in 2016.
Emin covers international news but also develops documentary photography projects. Among them “Limbo“, one of his long-term works. It tells the story of populations uprooted by the spiral of conflicts. In 2013, he started to document the complex situation of Kurds in Turkey. He is also focusing on Turkey’s current issues.
His work has been published by TIME, New York Times, Washington Post, Der Spiegel, Le Monde magazine M, Paris Match, Newsweek, among others.
Selection of awards:
Two World Press Photo Awards (“Spot News, second prize singles” in 2013 and “Multimedia Long Feature, the first prize” in 2014 for the video-documentary “Witnessing Gezi”)
“Public Prize” of The Bayeux Calvados awards for war correspondents in 2014.
In 2015, he collected the Magnum Photos Fund to complete his long-term project about the refugee crisis (Limbo).
In 2016, he was a member of the jury of 2016 World Press Photo Multimedia contest (Long Form category). In 2018 he is part of World Press Photo Multimedia contest’s jury (Short Form category).
Emin became a Magnum nominee in 2017. He currently lives in Istanbul.

Cloé Kerhoas worked for major French museums before becoming Coordinator & Photo editor of “Agence Le Journal”, and a freelance curator. She curated several shows for the Agency and collaborated with Le Monde Magazine, Time, Der Spiegel, The British Journal of Photography, L’Obs, Courrier International, Newsweek, Liberation, CNN, Al Jazeera among others.
Founded by Emin Özmen in 2013, Le Journal is a photojournalism independent agency that embraced cross-disciplinary mediums to cover with a strong commitment the struggles of human rights and world conflicts.
Cloé currently lives in Istanbul and works closely with Emin Özmen.

Qualified applicants will be selected through a combination of the merit of their work and their personal statement, and in the order of the application received.
Upon submission of your booking, Magnum Photos will get in touch with you directly with instructions about how to submit your portfolio images for review.
As part of our booking process, you will be asked to submit a $125 (€100) application fee that will be credited towards your full tuition if you are accepted to the masterclass. If you are not accepted, your $125 (€100) fee will be returned minus a 5% processing charge.
Magnum Photos reserves the right to cancel this event with less than 6 participants. Students will be given a full refund. In the event of cancellation, students will be given at least 1-week advance notice.
Full tuition fees need to be received by 18th of March 2018 to fully confirm your place.
Magnum Photos reserves the right to change or alter the program advertised.
For International applicants, Magnum Photos or PhotoEducate are not responsible for reimbursement of travel expenses in case the workshop is canceled. We highly recommend that you buy refundable tickets and/or travel insurance.
Refunds to applicants who wish to cancel their place on the workshop can only be given up to 14 days in advance of the date of the workshop. After this point, refunds cannot be issued.
