We love photography too. Which is why we understand the power of learning. What you can take away from a workshop is unmatched by any other learning experience but you can also learn and be inspired by a good photography book. So why not do both? Rocky Nook has hundreds of great photography books on their list. Enjoy a free one when you book your workshop through us.
From The Company: We love photography. Everything about it. Whether it’s capturing the candid smile of a child riding her bike for the first time, photographing the grit of Manhattan’s streets, recording an epic sunrise over Half Dome in Yosemite, or shooting a new line of clothes from Milan for the next cover of Vogue, we find it all fascinating, and we love how photographers express themselves through the infinitely variable capture of light, color, and moment. Seeing as you’re visiting our site, you probably do, too.
Rocky Nook is a small, independent publishing company that was founded in 2006 in Santa Barbara with the goal of helping photographers of all levels improve their skills in capturing those moments that matter. We are a small (but mighty!) seven-person team that loves creating beautiful books that help you master the technology, find inspiration, and hone your craft in order to create better pictures. In doing so, we are fortunate to partner with many of the best photographers and teachers in the world.
In 2016, the company relocated to San Rafael, California—just 13 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge—after founder Gerhard Rossbach retired and handed the reins over to Scott Cowlin. Scott is lucky to be joined by a very talented group of publishing veterans and photography enthusiasts. Half of the team is based in San Rafael with the other half keeping our roots alive in Santa Barbara.
20% Off Your Workshop Rental at LensRentals.com
I have been renting from Roger Ciala’s company for a very long time. The former physician turned entrepreneur and full-time passionate photographer - has a depth of knowledge about photography unparalleled in the industry and is a great resource. (see the Lensrentals Blog). https://www.lensrentals.com/blog/author/roger/
But keep in mind that the idea of renting a piece of equipment for a workshop is a double edged sword. On the one hand, it lets you use that $10K lens for your wildlife workshop for a small fraction of the cost. On the other, it’s often not a good idea to have a new piece of equipment on a workshop because there is a chance (I’ve seen it often) that you focus your attention on figuring out the gear distracting you from absorbing the plentiful learning and shooting opportunities all around. That said, I recommend renting gear for an extended time before you go so you’re comfortable with it and it doesn’t get in the way of learning. Lensrentals makes it easy to get and send back the gear and its low cost insurance lets you relax knowing that you’re covered regardless of what might happen to it (most often nothing).
From The Company: Lensrentals is the largest online rental provider for photography, videography, and lighting equipment and accessories in the United States. Headquartered in Memphis, Tennessee, with a satellite office in Nashville, Lensrentals ships gear to customers in all 50 states and also provides in-person pickups and returns to local customers.
Founded in 2006 by Roger Cicala as a way to expand his own gear collection and share his photographic knowledge, Lensrentals has grown from a one-man operation in a spare bedroom to a company with nearly 100 employees, dozens of experienced photo and video technicians, an in-house repair department, and the best customer service representatives in the industry. Roger continues to provide guidance and expertise to photographers of all experience levels, and is considered an industry authority on lens quality and testing, as shown by his work evaluating NASA satellite lenses.
Lensrentals serves hundreds of thousands of photographers and videographers annually, always while maintaining the values of our founder – share the best available equipment at its optimum quality, and educate and provide support to our customers to ensure they can achieve their goals regardless of experience level.
We carry camera bodies and lenses in every format from every major manufacturer, and all the audio, lighting and support accessories needed to cover any kind of shoot, from a family holiday card to a commercial advertising job. All equipment purchased is sold within two years so customers are assured our stock is always in like-new condition.
What makes Lensrentals different from other rental houses is our staff of trained photo and video professionals with a commitment to excellence, quality, and customer support! Every piece of gear is cleaned and inspected optically and physically to guarantee orders arrive on-time with compatible, working equipment. We’ve also developed additional programs such as Lenscap, Lenscap+, HD Subscription Shipping, and Keeper to offer customers added protection, value, and ease of process in their rental experience. For those looking to purchase rather than rent, Lensrentals’ sister site LensAuthority.com sells tested, guaranteed used equipment at an exceptional price.
Two Months Free From PhotoShelter
What do you do with all those portfolio-worthy images you’ve captured during your workshop? We love PhotoShelter for the beauty of their many website design options and their ease of use and upkeep. We think you will to. They have nine different templates with unlimited customizing to create a website that is truly your own and you’ll be up and running in minutes like we were:
What’s great about the PhotoShelter system is I can upload my full archive of images (with no file size limits!) right to my PhotoShelter account, sequencing, deleting and adding images to my site, in just a few clicks. Here’s the best part, I don’t have to re-format or resize those big files, PhotoShelter automatically does it —so the images look perfect and load fast. Meanwhile I can send selected galleries to my clients for approval (galleries look great when sent this way) and even sell prints automatically through their built-in shopping cart and partnership with major print labs. Having a professional-looking web presence is an important part of your photographic journey and a great way to inspire yourself and others with images made along the way.
From The Company: PhotoShelter transforms the way image makers and businesses communicate their stories and manage their visual assets online. With over 80,000 professional photographers and over 500 brands hosting 400 million files, we accomplish this through two solutions: PhotoShelter for photographers and Libris for enterprises.
In 2005, we were pioneers in launching the first cloud-based product for individual photographers to showcase, archive and sell their work. It offers beautiful websites, secure storage, plus over 100 professional-grade features to help photographers take their businesses to the next level.
Our latest product, Libris, is a centralized asset management platform that helps businesses quickly, easily and affordably harness the power of their visual content -- anytime, anywhere. Libris is used by top brands, universities, and sports teams including: Boston Red Sox, Baltimore Ravens, U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Georgetown University, Arizona Cardinals and the Associated Press.
15% off of Photo Mechanic Software form Camera Bits
I have known about and used Photo Mechanic since my days as a newspaper photographer. It was in photojournalism where Photo Mechanic was first embraced by digital photographers working on tight deadlines.
To this day there is nothing faster for quickly going through your shoot and choosing your final selects. You have the added bonus of adding metadata, keywords etc. and can work in concert with other software like Lightroom for example.
We highly recommend downloading the software well in advance of your workshop and learning how to use it. (It’s intuitive and won’t take you long). You download a free full version for 30 days (no restrictions) and when you’re ready to buy (as we think you will be soon after using) take advantage of the PhotoEducate 15% savings.
The critique process during a workshop can be the most important learning time during the experience. Photo Mechanic is the perfect solution for the lack of time you get during a workshop to edit.
From The Company: Photo Mechanic is a fast media browser for working with large numbers of files quickly and effectively. It’s the industry standard for culling, captioning, and keywording files. Photo Mechanic helps you work faster and smarter, so that you spend less time editing filenames, adding metadata, copying files and more time getting great images. Try it free for 30 days, with no credit card required, at https://camerabits.com. If you like it, PhotoEducate will provide you with a coupon code to get 15% off a new license or an upgrade.
Allianz Global Assistance
PhotoEducate’s Preferred Travel Insurance Provider
Workshops are amazing experiences and one of the best investments you can make in your photographic life.
But they happen at a specific time and they are expensive.
As workshop providers we’ve seen it all. Life happens and having cancellation and travel insurance is the smartest decision you can make besides booking that workshop.
If something unforeseen should happen at the last minute (as we’ve seen on occasion) chances are you’re covered and will get back your un-refundable money back for you to reschedule at a different time.
We like Allianz for the reasons they outline in their description below.
We used the “OneTrip Prime Plan” for most workshops and the “OneTrip Premier Plan” for higher cost workshops and those going to more remote locations.
