Methodology Master Class
This course, taught by all members of the MediaStorm team, offers a unique window inside the workflow and methods of a successful digital production company, including discussion on storytelling techniques, as well as elements of project organization, new business practices, and distribution strategies.

The MediaStorm team will share their workflow and methods and discuss essential elements of project organization and storytelling concepts. We will also have detailed discussions about working with clients and fostering relationships with NGOs and other partners as well as traditional and new models of distribution, offering a detailed blueprint with specific recommendations for producers and educators alike.
Throughout the week, attendees will be encouraged to participate in ongoing discussions and in-depth critiques of MediaStorm’s work, as well as the industry as a whole. Our goal is to teach and inspire others to improve on MediaStorm’s model and approach, and to foster a growing family of storytellers that will continue collaborating with one another and moving the business forward for years to come.

Participants will leave the Methodology Master Class with an understanding of what it takes to produce quality documentaries and digital multimedia stories, from software options, to story selection, to distribution.
This five-day Master Class is not a hands-on workshop, nor is it designed to teach attendees how to use editing software or how to shoot video - participants will receive one year of complimentary access to MediaStorm's detailed online training videos for that.

The team assembled to lead the Workshop has extensive multimedia experience both in the field and in post-production. As a group, they've attended, led or taught at the top workshops in the profession.
Brian Storm is founder and executive producer of MediaStorm.
MediaStorm publishes diverse narratives, offers advanced training seminars and collaborates with a diverse group of clients. MediaStorm’s stories and interactive applications have received numerous honors, including two duPont Awards, four Emmys, and five Online Journalism Awards.
Prior to launching MediaStorm in 2005, Storm spent two years as vice president of News, Multimedia & Assignment Services for Corbis, a digital media agency founded and owned by Bill Gates. Storm led Corbis' global strategy for the news, sports, entertainment and historical collections and directed the representation of world-class photographers for assignment work with a focus on creating in-depth multimedia products.
From 1995 to 2002, Storm was the first director of multimedia at MSNBC.com, a joint venture of Microsoft and NBC News, where he was responsible for the audio, photography and video elements of the site. In October of 1998, he created MSNBC's The Week in Pictures to showcase visual journalism in new media, a forerunner of the photography galleries that have become a standard offering of all major content sites today.
Storm received his master's degree in photojournalism in 1995 from the University of Missouri School of Journalism where he ran the New Media Lab and taught Electronic Photojournalism. In 1994, he launched the first version of MediaStorm as an interactive CD-ROM production company.
Storm serves on the Advisory Board for the W. Eugene Smith Fund, the Eddie Adams Workshop, the Alexia Foundation for World Peace, the Stan Kalish Picture Editing Workshop, Pictures of the Year and LOOK3. He is a frequent speaker on the subject of storytelling.
Born in Minnesota, he has endured the family curse of being a lifelong fan of the Minnesota Vikings. He lives in Menlo Park, CA with his wife Elodie and their children Eva and Jasper.
Prior to joining MediaStorm as Creative Director, Greg worked as Sr. Creative Director for HowStuffWorks.com and InfoSpace where he oversaw all aspects of design and user experience. Before joining HowStuffWorks.com he worked as a Sr. Product Manager for OnCue, an OTT television product created by Intel. Prior to working at Intel, he was the Chief Creative Officer of Daily Interactive Networks, a company dedicated to making it easy to create mobile apps & HTML 5 experiences. Greg was Creative Director for National Geographic Society where he oversaw the complete redesign of the National Geographic digital properties winning all major magazine design awards in 2010 and 2011. In 2012 Greg designed the Webby Award winning National Geographic’s 50 Greatest Photos iPad app. Prior to joining National Geographic he was Director of Design for Brightcove Publishing Products & he co-founded MetaStories in 2000 as VP User Experience.
Director of Partnerships
Samia is a co-producer of MediaStorm’s first feature-length original film, Fight Hate with Love. Some of the recent partnerships she has led and stories she has co-produced include The Trials of Spring, The Long Night, and MediaStorm’s first ever partnership with CNN and Soledad O'Brien, The War Comes Home.
Prior to coming to joining MediaStorm, Samia spent a decade working on human rights and development issues in Kenya, Pakistan, and the United States; with organizations like the UNDP, UNCDF, the World Bank, and Ashoka. She is a proud member of New York City’s only woman of color improv group, Xxcalibur.
Samia holds a Master's in Public Administration from New York University and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Chicago. She lives in Brooklyn with her husband, her son, and her dog - one of MediaStorm's office pets.
Tim McLaughlin has worked on over 25 films since 2010, including MediaStorm’s first feature film, The Long Night, as well as their first prime-time television broadcast, The War Comes Home: Soledad O’Brien Reports for CNN. His work has received recognition from the National Press Photographers Association (Best Documentary Multimedia Story) as well as the Webby Awards (Honorable Mention).
Prior to his move to MediaStorm, Tim was the Director of Multimedia at the Maine Media Workshops and Maine Media College in Rockport, ME. He worked as an educator in that role, developing and teaching a curriculum for the school’s first ever documentary focused multimedia program. Tim has also worked as an educator with the Eddie Adams workshop and helped develop and produce MediaStorm’s online training program, as well as their first educational e-book.
Originally from Louisville KY., Tim earned his masters of fine arts at the University of Florida’s School of Art and Art History, as well as a bachelors in history from Centre College. He lives in Brooklyn with his amazing wife Britt, and their ever-sleepy dog Robin Hood.
