Workshop overview

Spend January 15–17, 2027 photographing New York City with Steve Simon and David Brommer. With a maximum of six photographers, we’ll have time for guided shooting, editing and honest conversations about your photographs.

A pre-workshop group meeting and lecture help prepare you for the time together in New York.

We’ll move between the streets and warm indoor locations, exploring light, gesture, timing and the city’s daily life. In class, we’ll look closely at the work, share ideas and consider what you might try next. David’s teaching on composition and photographic style is part of the weekend.

After the workshop, a group Zoom class brings us together for a final lecture and critique. A final one-hour individual Zoom session gives you time to discuss the work and where you want to take it.

What you'll learn

Develop your own approach to street photography through guided shooting, assignments and image reviews. We’ll work on framing, juxtaposition, layering, light and gesture, and on recognizing when to wait and when to respond.

Explore the rhythm of a place, approaching strangers, working through shyness, and the ethics of photographing people in public. David will lead discussions on composition and photographic style.

Steve will help simplify your camera setup and shooting process, including autofocus, Auto ISO, exposure compensation and playback. We’ll also discuss lenses, zone focusing, flash and camera support, along with editing and Lightroom workflow. The workshop welcomes photographers using different camera systems, including phones.

Steve Simon

Steve Simon is an award-winning documentary photographer and the author of five critically acclaimed books, including The Passionate Photographer, selected as one of Amazon’s “Top Ten Art and Photography Books.” He has photographed in over 40 countries on assignment, with work appearing in publications such as The New York Times Magazine, Time, Mother Jones, Le Monde, Colors, Life, Harpers, Macleans, and The Walrus.

Best known for his humanistic approach, Steve’s photography explores the complexity and beauty of the human condition—capturing authentic, unscripted moments in real time. His images have been exhibited in solo shows in New York, Toronto, Montreal, and Buenos Aires, and three times at Visa Pour L’Image in Perpignan, France. An excerpt from Empty Sky, his photographic tribute to the aftermath of 9/11, was published by Life Books. The 9/11 Memorial Museum later acquired the complete set of prints for its permanent collection—recognizing the work as both witness and memorial.

A passionate educator, Steve has taught at the International Center of Photography (ICP) and the School of Visual Arts (SVA) in New York, and continues to lead workshops around the world. He is currently working on two new books—one on the art of photographic critique, and another exploring the American political convention.
