About the Competition

Run by the Royal Observatory Greenwich, this annual competition celebrates astronomy photography, from night-sky landscapes to distant galaxies. The 2026 competition closed at midday GMT on March 2, 2026. The next entry deadline has not been announced.

Prizes

The published overall award is £10,000. Adult category winners receive £1,500, runners-up £500 and highly commended entries £250. Selected work appears at the National Maritime Museum. Confirm the next edition’s prizes.

Eligibility

Previous rules allowed up to ten images. Adult entrants were 16 or over and paid £10; the young competition was for ages 15 and under. Young entry and the special prizes were free. Category-specific conditions apply.

Copyrights & Licensing

Published rules retain image copyright but grant RMG an irrevocable, worldwide, royalty-free licence covering related exhibitions, publications, publicity and other specified uses, including ten-year product licensing. Shortlisted captions have separate copyright provisions. Read the full rules before entering.
